Karen
I just sold the JUN18 /ES 2850 calls fro 5.25 per one lot to get me a little short the market.
---------------------------
Hit my 40% profit mark and position closed.
I had a FB position close too for 40% profit but I must not have posted that one. Can't find it.
I just sold a /CL strangle. I need to put more trades on. They are closing and I need to get theta numbers back up.

@gmg
would you happen to know how IV compares for USO options as compared to options on CL assuming an equivalent position (in terms of % to spot price)?
i'm thinking this might be a little harder on USO given the price at which it trades and the relative distance between available strike prices ....
I assume you are using the most efficient instrument (i.e., option on future vs. etf or etn)

BarTune
The IV on each is about the same. I usually, and I do mean usually, do not trade USO options purely because I have to go to the ATM to get enough premium for me to make the trade with my while.
Besides that, /CL tax liability is 25% on futures where short term capital gains is much more. So I trade a lot of futures out of tax efficiency. But I also prefer doing strangles instead of straddles (like I'd have to do in USO).

I will say if you have over $25k in an account you should get futures permissions. Why not. If you don't use it then who cares. It is another tool in the tool box. And you get better tax treatment than equities. Also, ask for all options permissions. Again, why not? Just another tool you might need.
Say you are long xyz and it goes down. You can get out or you can start selling calls against that position to bring your cost basis down. Options allows you to manage trades. A loser doesn't have to be a loser forever.

Thanks GMG,
I'm in Canada and there is no differential in tax treatment between the two. My current broker doesn't offer futures so I'd have to get another account.
I used to trade a lot of options but not as much now ... and when I do ... I'm usually a premium seller.

High IV - premium seller
Low IV - premium buyer with a preferable theta component, ex. calendar spreads
